These conservatives are partly right.

Play life safe and you will keep out of harm.

Be careful, be cautious, don’t take risks and you will never die on Mount St. Helens.

Your failure is measured by your aspirations.

Aspire not, and you cannot fail.

Columbus died in chains.

Joan of Arc was burned at the stake.

Let us all live snugly without risk, and life will soon be a little more than a thick gelatinous stream

of comfortability and ignorance.

~ Myles Connolly, Mister Blue, p. 91

Is that quote as sobering to you as it was to me?!?!  Nothing like a little perspective in the day……….

5 TRAVEL TIPS & TRICKS FOR STAYING OUT OF THE “GELATIONOUS STREAM”

1.    Make a list of “What-I’m-Going-To-Do’s” – This is a “bigger” list than the list you probably already have of fix-its, clean-its, and paint-its around the house.  This is a list that includes actions such as exercise regularly, stick to my priorities, travel the world with my spouse/kids, finish X project at work, find a more fulfilling job, etc.  List as many “What-I’m-Going-To-Do’s” as you can think of.  Don’t bother with being realistic.  Editing the list will come later.

2.    Prioritize your list – If your “What-I’m-Going-To-Do’s” has more than 10 items on it, cut it down to the 10 most important.  Next, prioritize those 10.

3.    Set measurable goals – Determine a specific date when you will have accomplished each of your “What-I’m-Going-To-Do’s” and clarify how you will know when you’ve achieved that goal.  For example, if one of your “What-I’m-Going-To-Do’s” is “Set better time boundaries at work”, what will that look like when you’ve reached the goal?  For example, this goal can be clarified and made measurable by specifying the following:  “I will set better boundaries at work – By March 15th I will have arrived at work by 8:30 a.m. every morning and left work by 5:30 every evening for 2 weeks straight.”

4.    Remove the obstacles to achieving your goals – What is keeping you from achieving these goals right now?  My guess is that you’ve probably tried very hard to reach these goals already.  So what keeps getting in the way?  Do you forget?  Do you have too many other things on your plate?  Do you have a recording in your head that keeps telling you you’ll never be able to reach this goal?  Whatever is in your way, get rid of it: If you need reminders wear your watch on your other wrist, leave post-its everywhere, have a friend call you, put it in your calendar, etc.  If you don’t think you have time, cut out whatever is not a HIGHER priority than this goal, rearrange your schedule, start saying no, etc.  If you keep cutting yourself off at the pass with that pre-recorded doomsday message, change the recording in your head – come up with something positive to say to yourself and post it somewhere so you remember.  Eventually, you’ll be able to “record over” the negative recording.

5.    Do it!! – Start with your number one priority on your “What-I’m-Going-To-Do’s” list and head for your goal.

(6.  Hire a coach – If none of the above works, think about hiring a coach - not because you’re a failure, but simply to give you the extra structure and “umph”.  Even Michael Jordan needed a coach to get from where he started to where he is now!!  See “A Note from the Author” below for further info.)
